For the sake of the laugh, as Caleb takes the stairs to the second floor, he says, "Dude, do you know what lives in basements? Rats and bats and, and fucking spiders okay?" He doesn't let on whether he's actually afraid of any of those things (okay, maybe spiders), but for the sake of the joke, he's willing to seem like he is.
